KOTC EdgewaterLaughlin, Nevada, 10-20-12 - After the thrills the King of the Cage warriors generated in Laughlin, Nevada at the fabulous Edgewater Casino on the shore of the Colorado River, Laughlin might soon be known as "Knockout City" as only 2 out of 15 fights went the distance in a wide ranging card that saw battles raging from 135 pounds all the way up to super heavyweight. It wasn't that long ago, when Art Davie and Rorion Gracie first originated the UFC in Denver, Colorado in 1993, that it was hard to find qualified fighters willing to step into the steel cage. Now, even on the amatuer level as on this night, the fighters displayed an amazing skill level of striking and grappling that would have more than qualified them to be in that first UFC event. Almost to a man, the competitors were well trained, well conditioned and well coached and were carefully watched under the sanctioning auspices of the ISKA to ensure safety and matchmaking suitability.

Rather than come out cautiously with an afraid-to-lose mentality that all too often earmarks the biggest of pro MMA events, the fighters came out hell-bent-for-leather with only a missed takedown or a first punch determing who won or lost. Fueled by passion and pride rather promotion and preening, the modern-day gladiators had the packed-to-the-rafters crowd on their feet for most of the night. In one of the most memorable performances, albeit the briefest, Gerald Harvey knocked out Arthur Powell in just 4 seconds, which tied the KOTC world record for fastest KO. LJ Torres and Pete Schaffer battled for three rounds with the overpoweing Torres getting the nod. In the closest fight of the night, JJ Tores beat Jonathan Noriega in a three-round split decision. Sam Hess and Justin Hernandez also slots online battled head-to-head for the entire first round, with Hess unfortunately getting cut and the fight being called for Hernandez via TKO after the first stanza. In what had to be the night's most popular fight, Bakersfield, California's Julia Avila battled local favorite Shannon Reid for most of the first round with the tough Reid getting rocked repeatedly by the talented Avila and fighting back gamely. In the end, Avila had just too much power and speed and got the 2:31 first round KO. Don't be surprised to see this amatuer go pro in the future.

Adding to the excitment of the event was the attendance of NHB cagefighting legend Tank Abbott, now a published novelist with his Bar Brawler book and also a KOTC color commentator, who greeted fans cageside and posed for pictures. Photos of all the fights are now available to view under the Gladmag MMA Photos link at the top of the page or by clicking here. Those who didn't get out to Edgewater for this event should make sure to plan a trip to Knockout City for the next battle royal, as KOTC visits the Color Red three times a year.
